On the Mythology of the Lion’s Gate
The Lion’s Gate comes to us when the Sun is in the sign of Leo, when in the Northern Hemisphere, the constellation of Leo is visible at the height of the night sky.
Ancient Egyptian culture believed that the Lion’s Gate heralded a time of great abundance as the Nile river would flood this time of year, bringing a blessing in the form of blossoming crops and a plentiful harvest.
What is true abundance?

This culture had many gods & goddesses which also reflected aspects of the human psyche, the myths of which also represented the gates of initiation the Pharaoh would pass through in order to be crowned the Divine Ruler. In this day in age, we are being invited to reclaim our own sovereignty and explore what true power means as we bring that mythic perspective into our own lives and choose to see every challenge gate as a point of initiation, calling us more fully into our Sovereign Soul Selves.
The Lion God/Goddess came in several forms, and on the Lion’s Gate, the focus turns to the God/Goddess Aker. Aker was the embodiment of the Horizon, personified by two lions facing away from one another, holding the sun between their backs. Therefore, this portal, this Lion’s Gate, is a threshold, a line in the sand, a point at which, when we cross in full awareness, we have the power to transform our perception of ourselves, our world, and therefore, our reality.
Aker stood between Day & Night, and it was believed that the night was caused by the Sun God Ra crossing across this threshold and journeying through a tunnel within the Earth to the Underworld and back again, bringing with him the light of conscious awareness to that which he bravely discovered in the dark. Aker opened the gate to welcome him back, the sun upon his shoulders…and these two lions were therefore seen as Yesterday and Today, the horizon line of time.
These were not normal lions. These were ‘Barbary lions’ or ‘Atlas lions’…that became known in Greek & Roman times as the Nemean Lion, whom the Hero Hercules was given the task of destroying. Over time, Aker, the lions of the horizon who held the power to absorb poison from the body of anyone who dared to pass into the Underworld and return with the light, became the lion with the pelt of iron that could not be pierced. In these myths, the Human Hero Hercules was asked to prove his extraordinary power by killing the undefeatable lion, and in historical terms, the Barbary lion became extinct as a species because they were brought into the Gladiator ring and seen as prizes to be conquered. As the Gods of Yesterday & Today faded into the ethers, and humans lost contact with that divine nature within them, they began to focus on the power they could “achieve” by conquering an apparent impossible foe “out there.” As our world became more and more solar focused, we lost touch with the beauty in the night, the treasures that could only be found in the fertile darkness, and the wisdom of these ancient myths were buried under the sands at the paws of the Sphinx.
In this day & age, it’s impossible not to feel the journey we’ve taken into areas of the collective underworld. The gift and the challenge of these last few years is that every person on this planet has been catalyzed into some form of great change, been forced to journey into new places within themselves and trust the process of transfiguration we are moving through as a species.
We’ve had to call on great bravery, the Lions within us, to let go of the yesterday’s and stay present without facing into the fear of what tomorrow might bring. As we reclaim our power to walk between realms, pass across the horizon line out into collective consciousness, we reclaim our capacity to create a new reality.
What we are here to activate in this Lion’s Gate is the portal of the HeartStar, which connects us eternally to the Celestial Lions within us, the place within that is both the key and the treasure.
