What is the Lion’s Gate?

Every July, the astrological wheel turns and the Sun enters the zodiac sign of Leo ♌︎, the constellation of the Lion. On July 26th through August 12th, the Lion’s Gate portal opens, signifying the rise of the star Sirius over the horizon. The name Sirius, derived from the Greek word for “glowing” or “scorching.”

In ancient Egypt, Sirius was known as “Sothis” and was related to the Goddess of cosmic alignment and star consciousness that brought prosperity and fertility. At the time that Sirius would rise each summer over the horizon, it would align with the Sun ☉ in our solar system, bringing both the longest days and the rising of the Nile river. Most of us in Western culture have been taught to fear floods, but this flooding was celebrated as the cycle of prosperity that came with the blossoming of the earth and the harvest that created abundant agriculture.

The Sun ☉ is associated with the sign of Leo when it’s at its height of the year. Being the agreed upon “center” of our solar system, the Sun, like the lion, is the symbol of confidence, dignity and sovereignty that radiates its warmth and glow over all it touches. At the gate of many temples such as Philae, temple of Isis, stand two Lions that one must pass through in order to enter that sacred space. They were known as the pillars of Yesterday & Tomorrow, signifying that in order to pass, one must attune their attention to the present now moment.

Across time & space, Leo ♌︎ is given the myth of learning to embody both true pride and authentic humility. If you have significant Leo placements in your birth chart, you will probably innerstand that great journey of noticing when you are acting from hubris and a need to be seen, or hiding like the cowardly lion. It’s all a journey of bringing conscious awareness to how we are learning to stand in and carry that great light of the Sun without burning ourselves or others in the process. The Lion’s Gate can be a perfect opportunity to connect with those inner stars and notice where you are on that journey of self-awareness.

The architecture of the Great Pyramid in Giza was built so that between August 8th & August 12th, during the Lion’s Gate, Sirius (Sothis, the Goddess) shines directly into a hole that creates a beam down into the Queen’s Chamber and a central star in Orion’s Belt (Osiris, the King) shines into the King’s Chamber. It was an important alignment honored in an inner sanctum that few could enter into unless they’d been initiated into these mysteries of what true sovereignty means.

The beauty of this time we are in is that each of us may undertake the journey of sovereignty, learning from the initiations of life what it means to walk in our true power and soul confidence. Our conscious participation in honoring Stargate portal times such as the Lion’s Gate attunes us to receive the codes and clues of that star consciousness in through the crown chakra at the top of our head. We can choose to focus and create from this space of opening to receive the same blessings of the stars that the Nile, the Queen Isis & the King Osiris received, learning how to govern and care for the society that looked to them to model what it meant to live a life in alignment with the Spirit that breathes through them and gives life to every aspect of the Universe.

Each time we step outside the bounds of our normal day to honor our alignment with the cycles of nature-both above and below-we align with a nourished sense of what it means to feel prosperous, to blossom with the Earth and allow the tides of creativity to rise within us.
